“At a recent news conference, Mr. Metcalfe said his goal was to eliminate “an anchor baby status, in which an illegal alien invader comes into our country and has a child on our soil that is granted citizenship automatically.”

Michael Hethmon, attorney for Immigration Reform Law Institute, at a press conference revealing birthright legislation, “As a leading society in human and social development, the native-born American population stabilized at a sustainable level almost a generation ago. Our demographic momentum has since been driven by immigration. Yet immigration levels have been set not by national consensus, but through the lawless and destructive anarchy of illegal invasion and settlement.”

“We are here to send a very public message to Congress,” said Pennsylvania state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R) at a press conference Tuesday. “We want to bring an end to the illegal-alien invasion that is having such a negative impact on our states.”

Republican Rep. John Kavanagh, who filed the Arizona plan Thursday, said the goal isn’t to get every state in the nation to enact such a law, but rather to bring the dispute to the courts in hopes of reducing the costs associated with granting automatic citizenship. “The result of that is they immediately acquire the right to full benefits, everything from welfare to cheese, which increases the costs to the states,” Kavanagh said. “And beyond that, it’s irresponsible and foolish to bestow citizenship based upon one’s GPS location at birth.”

REP. STEVE KING (R-IA), CHAIRMAN, HOUSE IMMIGRATION SUBCOMMITTEE: “But the impact of the anchor baby industry is this, that there is some turn key operations out there, for example, pregnant woman in China, can contract with a turn key operation, to be smuggled in — pregnant and smuggled into the United States, have the baby, get the little footprint on the birth certificate and fly back to China and wait for that child to get old enough to start the family reunification plan.

“We’re looking at numbers as low as 340,000 anchor babies a year. The higher estimates are 750,000 a year. We’re looking at perhaps as many as a million in this upcoming year, America that has their immigration out of control and granting somebody to catch into this giant ATM that America has become a welfare state.”
